Yes. Meshtastic uses LoRa mesh communication for messages and location sharing without cellular service, Wi-Fi or an internet connection. A nearby mesh—or your own group of nodes—is still required.
Seeed reports testing up to 8 km in open line-of-sight conditions at 915 MHz. Real range depends on terrain, antenna orientation, interference, radio settings and available relay nodes.
No. The X1 communicates through local LoRa mesh nodes and does not connect directly to satellites for messaging. It has no subscription fee, but coverage depends on reachable mesh nodes.
